The Argus Project is focused on network activity
audit, but the data that Argus generates is a rich source of network
activity indications that can drive a number of network operational
management tasks. Argus data provides clear, unambiguous indications
of network functionality and fault conditions at a semantic level
that could be used to tie together application and network function
and performance.
Argus can provide new network operation management information because
of it flexible deployment capabilities. Argus can be deployed
in distributed strategies, within both the end system and in the
network. Through correlation of the data between multiple probes,
issues such as the source of reachability and connectivity faults
become solvable problems. Argus can provide the basic
data needed to indicate some routing and network based application
errors through its Type-P1-P2 connectivity support. Argus
data also can provide the performance information needed to establish
behavioral baseline metrics for network end systems and applications
which could then be used to compare against near real-time Argus
data collected from the network.
Argus data can support the functions described above in the 2.0.0
release. Tools that analyze Argus data to perform some of these
tasks will be developed for future releases of Argus software.
